High Thrust Actuation

Dresser Masoneilan offers a range of piston-type actuators, including double-acting and spring-return designs for use with reciprocating or linear stem motion control valves. Standard designs offered by Dresser Masoneilan include the Model 84/85/86 and the Double-Acting Model 51 design. Maximum stroke range is flexible depending on the control valve travel requirements and the fail safe position specifications.

Selection Criteria

Piston Actuators are required where operating and functional requirements exceed the capabilities of the standard spring-diaphragm actuators. This typically includes control valve applications requiring higher actuator thrusts, faster response speeds and/or greater actuator stiffness to handle potentially unstable dynamic conditions within the valve. Piston actuators are the right choice under these types of conditions as well as for reciprocating and linear motion control valves with stroke requirements exceeding 4" (102 mm).

Piston actuators feature higher operating supply pressures, faster stroking speeds, optional double-acting and spring-return configurations as well as increased actuator stiffness to handle large dynamic forces within the valve. The Dresser Masoneilan Model 51 also features an integrated volume tank design for simplified fail safe operation.

Benefits

Some of the major benefits offered by the piston actuator include its smaller size and weight for equivalent thrust capabilities, enhanced control valve responsiveness and the ability to use in higher pressure drop and tighter seat leakage applications. This is a direct result of the higher operating supply pressure capabilities of the piston designs which is readily available in today's process plants. The Dresser Masoneilan Model 51 design does not require a separate volume tank device for fail safe to further simplify equipment installation.
